Teaching:
ETH Zurich, NUS Singapore and UBC Vancouver
At the ETH, in Singapore and at the UBC in Vancouver, I taught a number of courses, both in German and English, where I put a lot of emphasis in an active cooperation and an integration of the students into the learning process. The lab courses always started with a small colloquium to ensure the standard of knowledge and the preparation by the students.
Beside regular teaching sessions I constantly advised students and student workers in our labs. An early integration of students into the scientific routine is of gain for the students (early orientation during the study time) as much as for the groups ("wind of change").
Different students need a different level of interaction and guidance. I believe an essential part of good scientific culture is the passing on of knowledge and experimental skills to young students. In Singapore a very close collaboration with the students in the lab was of high importance because the experimental skills are basically not established during their undergraduates studies.
Another important aspect for me is to raise interest and support for scientific research with non-specialists. On several occasions I have prepared and presented video installations, graphical illustrations and popular scientific articles on my own and other peoples research.
-
- Lab-course physical chemistry (2 Semesters)
- Several introductory experiments
- Fluorescence-quenching
- Flashlight-photolysis
- Fluorescence spectroscopy
- Physical chemistry III, quantum mechanics (4 Semesters)
- Physical chemistry VII, statistical thermodynamics (2 Semesters)
- Advanced Optics and Spectroscopy (2 Semesters)
- Signal processing (2 Semesters)
The teaching documents and exercise sheets for the course "signal processing" were completely redesigned and updated by me. A comparable course on "scientific and experimental methods" was given in the National University of Singapore (NUS).
Possible teaching fields include/ span ideally:
- Photonics, Microscopy methods
- Single molecule spectroscopy
- Quantum optical experiments
- Signal- and data-processing
- Building scientific apparatus
- Lab electronics and interfacing experiments
- Programming

Also in an extracurricular context I organized and taught seminars and short courses on radio streaming and IT as well as scientific subjects to various audiences. Numerous courses are based on my background in computer science and my engagement with the CCC (Chaos Computer Club) since 1996.
All presentations were given in Zurich, if the presentations were
additionally given in other locations it is explicitly stated.
- Radio-streaming for Beginners (Brussel, Amsterdam, Darmstadt, Stuttgart, Berlin, Cologne etc.)
- Multimedia under Linux (Brussel, Ludwigshafen)
- Traces on the Internet (Winterthur)
- Encryption / Decryption
- Reverse Engineering
- Network Sniffing
- Wireless Networking
- Network-Hijacking
- Microcontroller-Programming (Atmel AVR)
- Shell-Scripting
- Perl
- LaTeX
- 3D-Imaging
- Prime numbers / Number theory
- Fractal geometry
